What You Need To Know When Buying An Engagement Ring

If you want the engagement ring that you buy for your loved one to be one she really loves, you are best off just asking her to pick it out for herself, but the surprise factor or the price you are willing to pay might be an issue, so you may well have to make the choice yourself. If you decide that you would like to choose an engagement ring without consulting your partner then you will need to put some serious thought and effort into getting the right one.

Be sure to adhere closely to what you think your loved one likes and does not like; use her current jewelry as a basis for what she might want from you. As an absolute minimum you need to establish whether she prefers vintage, classic looking jewelry or contemporary looking, bold jewelry. Has she ever looked at items of jewelry before and made comments about them?

To get a better idea of what she likes, go out shopping one day and whilst you are out visit a jewelry store and pay attention to what catches her eye. If she asks, just say you are looking for something for yourself, giving her the time to take in the selection and start making choices and suggestions for herself. Before you leave ask her if she saw anything she liked and make a mental note of her answer.

If in real doubt about what type of engagement ring to buy then opting for a diamond one is advisable as pretty much all women love diamond rings. While you might not feel that you have the money for a diamond engagement ring, you would be surprised at how cheap they can be. Diamonds are graded according to their carat, color, cut and clarity, and as long as you are prepared to get one that is not completely perfect then should be able to find one within your price range if you spend some time looking around.

As well as deciding on the type of engagement ring you will also have to find out what ring size to get. Try to check out one of her rings, ideally the one that is on the finger she will be wearing your engagement ring on, and see what size it is. If she does not wear any rings at the moment, you can guess her size by taking a look at one of her gloves or by drawing an outline of her hand and fingers as part of a game.

If you do happen to make mistakes regarding either the type of engagement ring that you buy or the size of it then it is no big deal really because it is always possible to go back and exchange it at a later date. A few days after giving the ring to your partner, just say that you totally understand if she wants to change it and that you will not be upset if she decides to do so.
